ChatGPT shopping after Instant Checkout: what to do now
OpenAI scaled back in-chat checkout in March 2026. How shopping in ChatGPT works now, how products get in, and what merchants should change.

In September 2025, OpenAI and Stripe launched Instant Checkout: shoppers could buy from a merchant without leaving ChatGPT. Six months later, OpenAI stepped back from it. A lot of merchant advice written in between still describes in-chat buying as the main event.
This post sets out what changed, what ChatGPT shopping looks like in late 2026, and what a merchant should do now, with the dates and sources to check it against.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?#
OpenAI deprioritised Instant Checkout as a standalone feature in March 2026 and refocused ChatGPT shopping on product discovery. In its March 24 post, Powering product discovery in ChatGPT, OpenAI said the first version lacked the flexibility it wanted, and that it would let merchants use their own checkout experiences while it concentrated on discovery. An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch the same day that merchants could still offer checkout through apps inside ChatGPT.
Adoption had been thin. Reporting put the number of merchants who integrated Instant Checkout at around a dozen, out of the millions on Shopify alone. The reasons offered vary by outlet; what matters for a merchant is the result.

How does shopping in ChatGPT work now?#
ChatGPT finds and compares products from merchant feeds and sends the shopper, or their agent, to the merchant to buy. There are three paths a purchase can take from a ChatGPT conversation:
- A link to your product page. The most common. The shopper follows the link and buys on your site as any visitor would.
- A merchant's app inside ChatGPT. Some large retailers run apps within ChatGPT that can take an order. Reporting in March 2026 named Instacart as supporting direct checkout this way, with Walmart planning an app; Shopify said it would not build one for its merchants.
- An agent that finishes the job. If the shopper delegates the purchase, a browser agent such as ChatGPT's own can carry the basket to your checkout. Whether it can complete it depends on your store: OpenAI noted its cloud browser could not sign in or pay at launch, while Shopify's WebMCP tools now let browser agents complete a Shopify checkout after the buyer confirms.
In every path, the payment now happens on infrastructure you control. That is good for your margins and your customer relationship. It also means the failures are yours: if your checkout refuses an agent, nobody at OpenAI will see it.
How do your products get into ChatGPT?#
Through a product feed, sent directly to OpenAI or through your commerce platform. OpenAI's feed specification is the reference, and it is more demanding than a quick export.
The OpenAI format has nine required fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price. A Google-compatible format is also accepted once OpenAI confirms it for your feed, so a Merchant Center feed can often be reused. Products are eligible for search by default (is_eligible_search); eligibility does not guarantee display. The checkout flag is separate and does nothing without an integration enabled on OpenAI's side.
Three details trip merchants up:
- Availability values differ by format. The OpenAI format accepts
in_stock,out_of_stock,pre_order,backorderandunknown; the Google-compatible format spells itpreorderand rejectsunknown. - Feeds do not update themselves. OpenAI's guidance is to update the feed whenever price or availability changes. Sale dates in the feed do not schedule anything.
- Bad rows fail quietly. A malformed row can be rejected while the rest of the feed processes. Check the upload history, not just whether the upload succeeded.
If you are on Shopify, agentic storefronts send your catalogue for you. The feed still reflects your product data, so the quality work is the same.
What should merchants do now?#
Treat ChatGPT as a discovery channel that sends buyers to your checkout, and make sure that checkout works for them. In order:
- Get the feed right. Complete required fields, accurate prices and stock, updated when they change. Use the upload history to find rejected rows.
- Make product pages agree with the feed. Same price, same availability, same title. Put the facts in Schema.org
ProductandOfferdata on the page, not only in rendered text. - Let the agents in. Shoppers who delegate will send a browser agent to your store. If your bot manager refuses it at the basket, the sale ends there. See why AI shopping agents get a 403 at your checkout.
- Remove human-only steps from checkout. A CAPTCHA on the purchase path stops every agent.
- On Shopify, check that WebMCP checkout works with your checkout customisations, so browser agents can complete purchases.
- Measure ChatGPT traffic. ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto many links it shares; segment that traffic in analytics and compare its conversion with your other channels.
How do you prepare your checkout for shoppers arriving from ChatGPT?#
Make the page they land on the product they asked about, and make the path from there to payment short and readable. A shopper who arrives from an assistant has already decided; the store's job is not to lose them.
- Land on the exact variant. If ChatGPT recommended the black shoe in size 10, the link should open with that variant selected. Product URLs that encode the variant, and a feed whose
urlpoints at it, do this for free. - Offer guest checkout and express wallets. A shopper sent by an assistant is often new to you. Forcing account creation before payment is where many of them stop.
- Show the same price the assistant quoted. If the feed said $129 and the page says $139 plus a surcharge, the shopper trusts neither you nor the assistant.
- Keep the path readable for agents too. Every field labelled, every button named, no step that needs a human gesture. When the shopper hands the job to a browser agent, those are the details that decide whether the order completes.
What should you watch in analytics?#
Traffic from ChatGPT, how it converts compared with your other channels, and where it drops out. ChatGPT shopping sends visitors and, increasingly, agents. Both are measurable.
- Segment the referral. ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto many of the links it shares. Build a segment on it and onchatgpt.comas a referrer. - Compare conversion, not just volume. Shoppers arriving from an assistant tend to arrive further along in the decision. If they convert worse than search traffic, something on the landing page or checkout is getting in the way.
- Follow the funnel. Look at where those sessions end: product page, basket, checkout step. A cliff at one step usually has a single cause, often a bot rule or a required field.
- Count agent visits separately. Signed agents identify themselves; your CDN or bot manager can report them. A rising count of agent visits with few completed orders is the clearest sign agents are being turned away.
Is agentic checkout dead?#
No. It moved. The idea that an assistant can complete a purchase for a shopper is alive on other surfaces and in other forms.
Google's agentic checkout in AI Mode and Gemini runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol and keeps the merchant as merchant of record. Browser agents complete purchases on stores that let them, and Shopify's WebMCP tools make that reliable on Shopify checkouts. Payment standards are maturing too: Google contributed the Agent Payments Protocol to the FIDO Alliance in April 2026, with a working group chaired by Mastercard and Visa.
What failed was one specific design: a single assistant taking payment for every merchant inside its own interface. What is replacing it keeps checkout with the merchant. For stores, that makes the quality of their own checkout, for agents as well as people, the thing that decides the sale. Our comparison of the agentic commerce protocols covers where each fits.
Frequently asked questions
- Can customers still buy products through ChatGPT?
- Yes, but the payment happens on the merchant's site or in a merchant's app inside ChatGPT. Since March 2026, ChatGPT focuses on discovery and comparison and sends shoppers to the merchant to buy.
- Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol still used?
- Yes. OpenAI and Stripe still maintain ACP, and OpenAI is extending it to support discovery feeds and promotions. Its latest stable version is dated April 17, 2026.
- How do I get my products into ChatGPT?
- Send a product feed to OpenAI in its format or a confirmed Google-compatible format, or use a commerce platform that does it for you, such as Shopify's agentic storefronts.
- Do I need to enable checkout in my ChatGPT feed?
- Only if you have a checkout integration enabled with OpenAI. The checkout flag alone does nothing. Most merchants should focus on search eligibility and accurate product data.
- How can I track sales that come from ChatGPT?
- Segment visits that arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com, which ChatGPT adds to many links it shares, and follow their conversion in your analytics.
